12 acquitted on arson charges during Muzaffarnagar riots

A local court in Muzaffarnagar has acquitted 12 people charged in two separate cases of dacoity and arson during the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots. The court acquitted him for lack of evidence or difference in the statements of the prosecution witnesses. 510 criminal cases were registered in connection with the riots and the police filed charge sheets in 175 of them.

The remaining cases were either closed or terminated. District government lawyer (Muzaffarnagar) Rajiv Sharma said that till now, the courts have given verdicts in 20 cases. Sharma said that by staying a stay in one case, all the accused in the rest of the cases have been acquitted. The only case in which the accused have been convicted so far is related to the murder of two youths – Sachin and Gaurav, Who used to incite riots in Kaval village. Seven people have been given life imprisonment in the murder case
