Multi-district water testing laboratory established in Mohali

The Water Supply and Sanitation Department on Thursday inaugurated the Multi-district Water Testing Laboratory at Phase II, Water Works Complex in Mohali. Punjab Water Supply and Sanitation Minister Razia Sultana said that the initiative would fulfill the determination of the state government to provide adequate facilities for testing and monitoring of drinking water being provided to the rural population of Punjab. He said the laboratory was equipped with the latest equipment to test 18 chemical standards of drinking water such as ultra violet (UV) – visible spectrophotometer, ion meter, BOD incubator, cod digester, turbidity meter and others.

The minister said that apart from regular monitoring and monitoring of departmental rural water supply sources, the lab would open in public and other institutions at nominal charges. He said that the lab is mainly in Mohali, Rupnagar and SBS Nagar will cater to the needs of the districts.

The minister further said that the Department of Water Supply and Sanitation has plans to set up a three-tier network of water testing laboratories which includes one state laboratory, six multi-district water testing laboratories in Mohali and 24 sub-unit labs at the block level. Principal Secretary Jaspreet Talwar said that the department has already set up a high-tech multi-district lab in Amritsar, while three multi-district labs have been set up in Moga, and Hoshiarpur and Sangrur will be commissioned by May 2021 .
