The issue of women’s safety in the digital space will also be discussed in the conversation. Twitter has been convened to discuss the issue of protecting the rights of citizens and preventing the misuse of social networks. At the meeting, the parliamentary committee will hear the views of Twitter representatives.

Meeting agenda documents will be uploaded to the members’ electronic portal and will also be mailed to members. Members have been asked to attend the meeting as the subject is very sensitive in the context of misuse of social networking sites. The leader of Congress, Shashi Tharoor, is the chairman of the Information Technology Committee, which consists of 31 members, including 21 from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha.

Taking note of the misuse of social networking sites, the National Commission for the Protection of Children’s Rights (NCPCR) requested on Monday a report from Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook and Telegram about a post on these social networking sites. It offered the illegal adoption of orphans amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The lead children’s rights body has also ordered these four social media bodies to submit their reports within 10 days. He also warned them that strict action will be taken against them if they do not report such messages. In a letter to these social media sites, the NCPCR suggested that if anyone posts such content, an immediate report should be sent to the police commission (s) or the state commission along with the user’s detailed IP address.
