Calcutta HC adjourns hearing of plea challenging Nandigram results on Thursday

The Calcutta High Court on Friday adjourned till Thursday (June 24) the hearing of a petition filed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee challenging the election victory of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram. The High Court had accepted the petition and initially listed it for hearing today. According to sources in the ruling Trinamool Congress, Sanjay Basu, a lawyer close to Abhishek Banerjee, filed the petition challenging the Nandigram result and sought a court-monitored probe. On May 3, a day after the assembly election results were announced, Mamata alleged that Nandigram’s returning officer had threatened her life by refusing to recount the votes. Showing a WhatsApp message to support his claim, He said that the RO fears for his life and is under pressure. Claiming that EVMs were tampered with, he said his party would approach the court on the issue. Showing a WhatsApp message on May 3, the Trinamool chief had said, “BJP played a bad game. I don’t know why I have heard that the Central Force personnel threatened the officials at the counting center and there was a power cut for about 40 minutes. .
