West Bengal: Woman beaten, hair cut, seven arrested over ‘affair’

Seven persons have been arrested for allegedly thrashing a 30-year-old woman and cutting her hair in Jalpaiguri district. According to sources, local residents harassed her on suspicion of having an “illicit relationship”. The accused had also tied her husband to a tree. The police came to know about the matter when the video of the alleged incident surfaced on social media. Police sources said some villagers alleged that the woman had an extramarital affair with a local youth. They (villagers) held a meeting to discuss the matter. The alleged incident took place when the woman was returning home with her husband after attending the meeting. According to sources, some local residents surrounded the couple. They tied the husband to a tree and beat up the woman. Sources said that they also allegedly cut her hair to “teach her a lesson”. “As soon as we got the complaint, An FIR was lodged. Seven people have been arrested,” Jalpaiguri Superintendent of Police Devarshi Dutta told The Indian Express. According to sources, other related charges including assault and molestation have been leveled against the accused persons. Recently, a tribal woman in Alipurduar district was allegedly paraded naked and beaten up by villagers for “abandoning her husband for another man”. Later the accused were arrested. The National Commission for Women (NCW) took cognizance of the incident on Tuesday. NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma has written a letter to the police seeking a report in this matter. . In Alipurduar district, a tribal woman was allegedly paraded naked and beaten up by villagers for “abandoning her husband for another man”. Later the accused were arrested. The National Commission for Women (NCW) took cognizance of the incident on Tuesday. NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma has written a letter to the police seeking a report in this matter. .
