Agra hospital gets clean chit, closed after owner’s ‘oxygen supply cut’ video

Agra’s Shree Paras Hospital, which was shut after a purported video clip surfaced of its owner cutting off oxygen supply to Covid patients, has been given a clean chit by government officials. In the video, the owner, Dr. Arinjay Jain, He was talking about cutting off oxygen supply for five minutes to find out “who will die” as part of a “mock drill”. He said in the video that 22 patients were “filtered out” because they “turned blue” during this “experiment”. A government committee set up to investigate the incident has concluded that there were no deaths due to the hospital’s action. “The Death Audit Committee during its investigation found that all the patients were treated as per the COVID protocol and their oxygen status and supply details have been listed. It was also found that the oxygen supply of none of the patients was interrupted. The patients who died had comorbidities and (deaths) because of their critical condition. The hospital was supplied with enough oxygen, The report prepared by the 4-member committee said. The report found that 16 patients had died on the day of the alleged “experiment”. The report also highlighted the details of each patient who died on April 26. However, the authorities found the hospital guilty of spreading fake information when the Covid wave was at its peak, the report said. The investigation found that despite having adequate supplies, the hospital discharged patients citing lack of oxygen. Officials said that action would be taken against the hospital under relevant sections of the Epidemic Act. In the viral video, the doctor can be heard saying, “Ek mock drill curry hum sabh 7 baaj… Then 22 patients were sorted out… opened immediately. 22 truncated J will kill. Went to the roof, started reading blue… Come on, 74 left… time will be found… this was the biggest experiment. (We did a mock drill at 7 in the morning. We made it [oxygen supply] zero. Then the 22 patients who were likely to die were filtered out… We immediately restored the supply. They started turning blue… 74 left… we got time… this was our biggest experiment)”) The investigation found that 10 complaints and memorandums were submitted against the hospital from three social organizations, which were eligible for setting up of death audits. The committee included three doctors from SN Medical College and an officer from the Agra Medical Department. “In this context, the doctor submitted before the committee that certain words in the video were not his and the video was circulated to create sensation and was part of a criminal conspiracy. The video was also used to blackmail him, The report stated. The report said that the role of the media person in the case as well as the counter allegations will be investigated by the police separately. Dr Jain had earlier told The Indian Express: “We adjusted the oxygen bed flow of the patients just to check how much amount is needed. Since everyone was saying that oxygen should be used judiciously, we decided to adjust the levels to see if we could use less. We identified 22 patients who required high flow oxygen. We had sleepless nights over the supply of oxygen and this was our experiment to stabilize the supply. We did not cut oxygen as is being said everywhere. There is no irreversible effect of reduced oxygen supply.” .
