Today 22nd December is National Mathematics Day (National Mathematics Day). It is celebrated in the honor of the great mathematician Ramanujan. Actually, Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu in a Tamil Brahmin Iyengar family. He had studied at the Government College in Kumbakonam, but failed in his 12th examination due to his lack of interest in non-mathematical subjects. Ramanujan also started working as a clerk in the Madras Port Trust in 1912.

It is said that it was here that his mathematical talent was first recognized by a colleague, who was himself a mathematician. After which Ramanujan was asked to go to Professor GH Hardy of Trinity College, Cambridge University. It was announced in 2012 by the then Prime Minister of the country, Dr. Manmohan Singh during the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Ramanujan at Madras University. According to Ramanujan’s biography, once Professor Hardy had come to see Ramanujan in the hospital. He told that he has come here sitting in taxi number 1729. After which Ramanujan told him that this is the smallest digit to know the sum of two distinct cubes in two ways. Since then, the number 1729 is still popular in the world of mathematics as Hardy-Ramanujan number.
