Parliament approves the Electoral Law Amendment Bill related to electoral reforms, there is a provision to link voter ID with Aadhaar

New Delhi, Dec 21 (PTI) The Election Law (Amendment) Bill, 2021 was passed in Parliament on Tuesday amid heavy protests by the opposition members. The bill proposes to link voter ID card and list with Aadhar card to prevent duplication and bogus voting in electoral rolls. The bill was passed by voice vote after discussion in Rajya Sabha amid heavy protests by opposition members. Lok Sabha has already passed it.

Opposition members described the bill as a violation of the fundamental rights and the right to privacy given by the Constitution. Through this bill, it has been said to amend the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Responding to the brief discussion on the bill, Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the government proposed to amend the Election Act to ensure that no person can register in more than one constituency and to prevent bogus voting.
