India becomes troubleshooter for Tsunami affected Tonga, 2 lakh US dollars in aid

On May 26, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the country’s leadership in his hands and gave a message that his policy would be ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. During his tenure so far, it has been proved many times that Prime Minister Modi has followed this policy with complete honesty. He has helped other countries by becoming a troubleshooter in difficult times. Now announced an immediate relief assistance of 2 million dollars to Tonga affected by tsunami and volcanic eruption.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of India expresses its deepest sympathies to the government and people of the Kingdom of Tonga for the damage and destruction caused by the Tsunami in Tonga. In view of this unprecedented calamity, India has also come forward to help. The Modi government has provided financial assistance of $2 million for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction in the Kingdom of Tonga. In this hour of crisis, by standing with the people there, the Modi government has again shown its commitment to international cooperation.

India stands firmly with Tonga in times of distress and devastation due to natural calamities, as it did during Cyclone Gita in 2018. In November 2019, Prime Minister Modi said in his statement that disaster risk reduction and management is an important pillar of India’s Indian Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI).

Significantly, on January 15, 2022, the Kingdom of Tonga was hit by a volcanic eruption and tsunami. This has affected a large part of the country’s population and has also damaged critical infrastructure. According to officials, four-fifths of Tonga’s population has been affected by the tsunami and volcanic ash.
