India is self-sufficient in the production of wheat. But the biggest problem has been that due to negligence and lack of a special strategy in the previous governments, a lot of wheat was wasted in the godowns. Neither the public nor the farmers were tried to benefit. Today, the Modi government is working on a strategy to make good use of wheat by preventing it from rotting in the godown and becoming a morsel of rats. Along with using it in public welfare schemes, it is making serious efforts to increase access to the market of other countries. As a result of this, today India is feeding the people of its own country as well as the people of other countries of the world and is also increasing the income of farmers.
Wheat exports are expected to be higher this year due to reduced supply of wheat worldwide due to the war between Russia and Ukraine. According to sources, due to the relentless efforts of the Modi government, most countries, including Egypt, have provided India access to their market. This will help in making a permanent place in the wheat export market for India in view of the increasing demand for wheat. This will also increase the income of the farmers in the country. Dr. M. Angamuthu, Chairman, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) said, “The global crisis has created an opportunity for India. We are targeting to double our exports to 12-15 million metric tonnes in the financial year 2022-23.”
Due to the increasing demand for wheat in the world and the activism of the Modi government, Indian wheat has been successful in making its place in many countries. Within a year, Indian wheat exports have increased by more than three and a half times. According to government data, exports of 50 lakh metric tonnes of wheat have been more this year than last year. A total of 21.55 lakh metric tonnes of wheat was exported from the country in the financial year 2020-21. Whose market price was $567.93 million. In the financial year 2021-22, 70.35 lakh metric tonnes of wheat has been exported from the country. Whose market price is $ 2035.09 million.
India is the world’s No. 2 wheat producer, but has been lagging behind in making the most of its export potential. But with the efforts of the Modi government and taking advantage of the opportunity, Indian wheat exports are likely to happen in a big way. This will give better price to the farmers and reduce their dependence on government procurement. Apart from this, it will help to clear the stock which is always over-stuffed. Consumers have also benefited from lower prices. While wheat prices have risen across the world, they have remained largely stagnant in India due to ample reserves. The price of wheat was Rs 27.90 per kg in March 2021, which stood at Rs 28.67 in March 2022. The wholesale price of flour was Rs 31.77 per kg in March 2021 as against Rs 32.03 per kg in March 2022.
