Amidst the peasant opposition, the US has now come out in support of India and has supported the Centre’s three agricultural laws. The State Department issued a statement indicating that the new Biden administration supports the Indian government’s move to reform the agricultural sector.

A State Department spokesman said, “The United States welcomes steps that will improve the efficiency of India’s markets and attract private sector investment.”

Reacting to India’s ongoing farm protests, the State Department further stated that “peaceful protest is the hallmark of any thriving democracy” and differences between the parties should be resolved through dialogue.

Republic day violence
As India celebrated its 72nd Republic Day, a farmers’ tractor rally planned on nine pre-determined routes turned violent at points. Some farmers forcibly entered Central Delhi, clashed with the Delhi Police and placed flags at the Red Fort. Chaotic scenes were witnessed throughout the area for hours as protesters pelted stones at police and damaged vehicles. Police personnel tried to control the crowd by charging sticks and firing tear gas shells at them, but they were unsuccessful, later citing their closure and refusing to mobilize the case. This is something that has dominated western celebs.

What are Farm Laws?
The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 aims to free the farmers from the constraints of the State Agricultural Produce Market Committees, so that they can sell their produce anywhere. Meanwhile, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 protects and empowers farmers to engage with processors, wholesalers, large retailers, exporters for agricultural services. This contract emphasizes the provision of farming. The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 specifies that the supply of food items including cereals, pulses, potatoes, edible oilseeds, and oil will be regulated only in exceptional circumstances.
