Indian lawyer Kiran Ahuja named as head of US Office of Personnel Management

24 February (US) US President Joe Biden has named Indian-born lawyer and activist Kiran Ahuja as the head of the Office of Personnel Management.

The Office of Personnel Management oversees the management of over two million US civil service officers. If Ahuja’s (49) nomination is approved by the Senate, she will be the first Indian-American person to hold the post.

Ahuja served as the Chief of Staff to the Director of the Office of Personnel Management from 2015 to 2017. She has over two decades of experience working in the public service and non-profit sector. Currently she is the Chief Executive Officer of ‘Philanthropy Northwest’, a regional network of philanthropic organizations.

Ahuja began his career as a civil rights lawyer in the US Ministry of Justice. He served for six years as the executive director of a White House program during the Alabama-Biden administration.

Ahuja was raised in Savannah, Georgia and graduated in political science from Spelman College and law from the University of Georgia.
