141 farmers have committed suicide in Chhattisgarh till 1 February

The Chhattisgarh government told the assembly on Friday that 141 farmers committed suicide in a 10-month period between April 1, 2020 to February 1, 2021. This leader was answering a question from the opposition Dharamlal Kaushik. Following the government’s reply, the BJP walked out of the House expressing dissatisfaction over the reply. Earlier in the day, the opposition BJP attacked the Congress on the issue of farmer suicides, with Kaushik asking the government during the House of Questions about the number of farmer suicides in the state and whether any compensation was given to the families. In his response, State Agriculture Minister Ravindra Choubey informed the House that 141 farmers committed suicide in a span of 10 months. He further stated that in one case, a Patwari of Kodagaon district was suspended for making a mistake in crop Girdawari and land record document. Kaushik replied whether “Chhattisgarh is a peasant state or a peasant killing state” and demanded an inquiry into all cases of farmer suicides. Chaubey accused the BJP of trying to politicize farmer suicides. “Suicide also happened during his 15-year rule, did he bother to pay any compensation? They are trying to politicize unfortunate deaths. Suicides are always investigated. The House soon witnessed ugly scenes as both Congress and BJP leaders accused each other of insulting the deceased peasants, following which the saffron party MLAs walked out. .
